This tutorial shows how to add VirtualBox repositories to your Ubuntu system so that you can install Oracle VirtualBox in Ubuntu 18.04 or 16.04, and to always get the latest releases when they become available. Follow the steps below to install VirtualBox Ubuntu 18.04 / 16.04.
The first step is to login to your system and update your system packages to the latest version by entering the command lines below.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Next, enter the commands below to add the VirtualBox repository key to allow Ubuntu to validate that the packages downloaded from the repository is trusted and signed with the key.
wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
Now that the key is added, you can then add the VirtualBox repository to your Ubuntu system.
sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian `lsb_release -cs` contrib"
Finally, enter the command below to update Ubuntu repositories including the VirtualBox repositories we’ve added earlier, and to install the latest available version of Virtualbox 5.2 for Ubuntu 18.04 / 16.04.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-5.2
Once the command is executed successfully, VirtualBox will be installed. You can launch VirtualBox Ubuntu 18.04 or 16.04 using the command below.

Note that the VirtualBox package download architecture (64-bit or 32-bit) has to match your Ubuntu Linux kernel architecture. That said, if you are using Ubuntu 18.04 or 16.04 64-bit, you will need to install AMD64 package. It doesn’t matter if you have an AMD or an Intel processor.
