How to Free Up Space on Windows 10 with Storage Sense

Published by Nyau Wai Hoe - Updated on

Storage sense is a new feature in Windows 10 that when enabled it will automatically clean up unnecessary junks from your hard drives and free up space at a set time interval. It does almost the same job as Disk Cleanup but it runs automatically without any action needed at your end.

If you are the kind of person who likes to automate things you were repeating every once in awhile, storage sense is a handy way to automatically free up space on your hard drives. It removes files you don’t need such as temporary files, deleted files in the recycle bin, and unchanged files in the Downloads folder, every 30 days. You won’t have to remind yourself to clean up your recycle bin ever again.

How to enable Storage Sense in Windows 10

The Storage Sense option is in the Storage setting in Windows 10. By default, it was turned off because Microsoft wouldn’t want you to think that Windows has the ability to delete your files without your consent. You will have to turn it on manually to enable the feature. Here’s how to go to it.

  1. Go to Start Menu.
  2. Type Storage and select it.where is storage sense
  3. Under Storage Sense, click on the switch button to turn on Storage Sense to enable storage sense

Alternatively, you can click on the “Change how we free up space” link just right below the switch to configure how Storage Sense works.

From here, you can configure what files you want Storage Sense to delete and how often they should be deleted. Just tick the checkbox for actions you would like it to perform. There are three options which you can enable.

  • Delete temporary files that my apps aren’t using.
  • Delete files that have been in the recycle bin for over 30 days.
  • Delete files in the Downloads folder that haven’t changed in 30 days.

All of these options are pretty clear for what they do. However, for the third option, you may want to think about it again as it would delete files that you have downloaded from your browser. They may be important to you even though it will only delete those that haven’t had any changes in the past 30 days. You can go to this folder by going to This PC > Downloads.

When Storage Sense is on, it will automatically run itself when it detects your drive is low on disk space. At other times, it will occasionally perform the cleanup you have chosen from the 3 options mentioned above.

There is also a “Cleanup now” button for immediate cleanup upon clicking it.

One thing we’ve noticed about Storage sense is that it also helps deleting the windows.old folder that left on your hard drive if you’ve previously done an upgrade from an older version of Windows to Windows 10.

The windows.old folder is normally a giant sized folder that was left to you in case if you want to retrieve anything from your previous Windows. If you have nothing that you would like to retain in the windows.old, Storage sense is safe to be turned on. Otherwise, it will automatically remove it the next time it runs.
